Why do mass flow meters need recalibration?

How do you know for sure that the gas flow that you measure or set is the right one? The answer is quite simple: make sure that the device with which you measure or set the gas flow gives the real value - and that can be done by calibrating (and adjusting) the device. Calibration is the process of finding the deviation between a unknown quantity (device under test, DUT), and a known (reference) quantity. Results of a calibration are stored in a calibration certificate.

What is On-Site calibration?

Onsite calibration of flow meters is the process of verifying and adjusting the accuracy of flow meters at their installation location. This approach eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming dismantling and transport of the meters to a calibration lab. The calibration process involves comparing the actual flow rate with the meter's measurement to determine any discrepancies and adjusting the meter's settings to improve its accuracy.
Onsite calibration offers several benefits, including minimal disruption to operations, reduced downtime, and increased productivity. Additionally, it provides a more accurate representation of the flow measurement system's performance, considering the installation location's unique factors. Overall, onsite calibration of flow meters is a convenient and cost-effective approach that ensures reliable and accurate measurements, ultimately improving process efficiency and reducing operating costs.
To perform onsite calibration of mass flow devices, clients must possess a calibration setup that includes a set of reference mass flow devices that have already been calibrated and have the appropriate flow capacity. How often should I perform a calibration check on my mass flow instruments?

All process instruments, including mass flow instruments, are subject to wear and tear due to the conditions of the process in which they are installed. Factors such as temperature fluctuations, shifts in electronic component tolerances, and even minor contamination build up can all impact the accuracy of the instrument over time. It is recommended that instruments undergo regular calibration checks or recalibrations to maintain accuracy. However, the frequency of calibration may vary depending on the specific application's conditions and running time. While Bronkhorst® instruments do not have specified calibration due dates, the company recommends an annual calibration. Ultimately, each customer must determine the appropriate recalibration schedule based on their application conditions and quality procedures. Properly calibrated instruments can improve accuracy, reliability, consistency, and production yields.
An on-site calibration check or buying Bronkhorst FLUICAL Portable Calibrators may be considered to reduce downtime and costs.
