Bronkhorst is a partner in the PHANTOM project, a European initiative focused on developing advanced photonic technologies for gas sensing. Together with other project partners, Bronkhorst contributes to innovative solutions that support accurate gas measurement across a wide range of applications.

 

Building blocks of the PHANTOM platform

Applications
The PHANTOM platform is designed for a wide range of gas sensing applications, including agriculture, livestock farming, green energy, combustion processes, fruit storage and industrial monitoring.
Laser technology
Different laser wavelengths are used to target specific gases and application requirements. This flexible approach allows the platform to be adapted to a variety of gas sensing challenges.
Measurement cell
Laser light passes through a gas cell or photonic spiral, where it interacts with the target gas and generates an optical signal for reliable industrial and environmental monitoring.
Detection
Detectors are selected according to the wavelength and signal intensity required for each application. This modular approach supports a flexible platform for diverse gas sensing needs.

From photonics to practical gas sensing

By combining lasers, photonic spirals and gas cells as building blocks, the project creates a flexible platform that can be configured for different gas measurement applications. The technology is being demonstrated in sectors such as agriculture, fruit storage, green energy and industry.


The platform enables accurate measurement of gases including NH₃, CH₄, CO₂ and H₂, as well as trace gases such as ethylene. This supports improved process control, better product quality monitoring and more sustainable operations.


Bronkhorst contributes to the development of reliable gas sensing technologies and their practical application in real-world environments.

Targeted results

The project aims to:
  1. Apply the gas sensing platform in: 
    Agriculture and livestock farming: NH₃, CO₂, HCN, CH₄
    Green energy and combustion: H₂, NH₃, CH₄, NO₂, CO₂
    Fruit storage: MCP (C₄H₆), CO₂, C₂H₄
    Industry: CH₄, CO₂, H₂O
  2. Develop measurement algorithms, detectors and control systems to support these applications.
  3. Develop new laser sources and integrate existing laser technologies into the platform for a wide range of gas sensing applications.
  4. Develop a photonic spiral on the AlOx platform, providing an optical path length of more than one meter within a footprint of only a few mm².
  5. Integrate gas cells into the gas sensing platform.
  6. Create a web portal that provides a clear overview of the platform's capabilities and application opportunities.
  7. Strengthen the photonics and gas sensing ecosystem in the eastern Netherlands.
