Burner application

Application requirements

In these combustion processes, the result primarily depends on the quality and consistency of the burner flame. The flame is produced with a gas mixture of oxidant (O2) and fuel (natural gas) drawn from all burners of the production line. Ensuring a steady gas supply is crucial to prevent flame extinguishment and maintain a constant and homogeneous gas mixture. By utilizing gas flow meters, you can minimize your maintenance costs, and reduce the risk of production interruptions, eliminating the need for manual adjustments by operators.

Process solution

Together with the customer, a solution with through-flow mass flow controllers was chosen. This solution can be compared with pressure control: two gas mass flow controllers are used for each burner— one for the fuel (methane, propane, or acetylene) and another for the oxidant (air or oxygen in the case of oxy-fuel combustion). These controllers are combined to optimize the combustion process. Accurate gas injection control is essential for achieving optimal combustion.

For this application the MASS-STREAM series flow controllers are a good fit. They feature a robust IP65-rated housing, making it well-suited for industrial and hot environments. Unlike traditional mass flow controllers, these instruments are less sensitive to contamination because their measuring element is positioned within the main gas stream.

Flow scheme

How can you benefit from MASS-STREAM flow controllers?

The MASS-STREAM series employs through-flow thermal mass flow technology, enabling precise measurement and control of flow rates regardless of pressure and temperature variations. This eliminates the need for expensive pressure-reducing valves upstream to stabilize the pressure.

Additionally, if a burner becomes clogged and generates back pressure, the combination of flow meter, valve, and control loop compensates by adjusting the valve opening, ensuring process stability. Monitoring this valve action through a data acquisition system helps prevent and minimize production interruptions.

If you choose the MASS-STREAM model with integrated display and operator buttons, the flow instrument itself features local control function. Alternatively, it can connect to a PLC for command control or an acquisition system to track the process.

"Thanks to Bronkhorst's MASS-STREAM controllers, our burner operations are more efficient and reliable, minimizing production interruptions and enhancing overall performance."
