Application requirements
One of the customers’ requirements is to have the possibility to change the composition from exceptionally low contents of gases, like carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxide (NO), to extremely high contents of gases. Additionally, they want to changeover very quickly to another gas mixture and generate unburnt fuel and humidity.

Process solution
Bronkhorst supplied a set of sixty mass flow controllers (EL-FLOW Prestige) and two evaporators (CEM) for each automotive test bench, to facilitate the creation of artificial exhaust gas compositions. These systems simulate various operational points, ranging from a few milliliters per minute to 20 liters per minute. Each flow controller is dedicated to a specific exhaust gas component, including N2, O2, CO, CO2, NO, hydrocarbons, and sulfur compounds.
These gases are individually regulated and then combined in a mixing chamber. Once the flow stabilizes, it is directed to the reactor containing catalytic reduction devices, lambda probes, or NOx traps.

The EL-FLOW Prestige F-200CV stands out for its ability to control extremely low gas quantities, which is crucial for dilution and generating low ppm levels of pollutants.
Additionally, the CEM system is an exceptional evaporator that produces stable and accurate vapor flows from hydrocarbon liquids and water, simulating unburnt components and humidity in exhaust gases.
This solution was chosen for its exceptional flexibility and high accuracy. The setup required adaptability to accommodate varying real-world working points (compositions) and to prepare for future testing scenarios, such as e-fuel liquids and new engine efficiency evaluations.
