Continuous vs batch manufacturing
Continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing involves designing a process which is (fully) automated with minimal manual intervention. It demands a higher level of accuracy and monitoring of chemical ingredients. You can achieve this by using mass flow devices and combine them with a pump.
Traditionally, human pharmaceuticals are manufactured instep-by-step batch process to ensure consistent quality and efficacy of the finished medicine. More and more manufacturers switch from the traditional batch manufacturing process to a continuous manufacturing process instead.
Application requirements
To manufacture pharmaceuticals in a continuous way, the chemical reactants need to be added, mixed, and transferred in an accurate and repeatable way throughout the entire process, over and over again. The customer desired a modular system where they were able to add or remove components. As every medicine they manufacture required a different configuration. Besides that, collecting process data with real time mass flow, densities and temperatures was vital. These data needed to be recorded and archived to be available for regulatory authorities in case of inspection.

Process solution
Bronkhorst was able to develop a compact skid that could easily be extended with multiple skids. This way it was possible to combine skids with different configurations to offer the most flexible solution. The dosing skids consisted of a Coriolis-based flow meter combined with various kinds of peristaltic and gear pumps, and a pressure sensor.
By eliminating time-consuming and error-inducing interruptions that can occur in traditional pharmaceutical batch processing, the new continuous manufacturing process is faster, more reliable and more flexible. Communication with the skid is via the Profibus protocol. The company utilizes a DCS (a Distributed Control System) which controls the entire process centrally, records data and archives all the data for regulatory and traceability purposes.

"The compactness of the design made it easy for us to combine multiple skids like a plug & play system. Very easy to work with."
